Fair Housing Legislation

Two bills will be carried in the 2014 legislative session that address housing discrimination against the LGBT community.

HB 871 (status: voted down 12-3)

Rep. Smith’s House Bill 871 would establish protections from housing discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, veteran’s status, lawful source of income, arrest or conviction record, and domestic violence abuse status.

HB 804 (status: voted down 13-5)

Rep. Brossett’s House Bill 804 would have modernized Louisiana’s fair housing law to forbid discrimination in rental or sale of housing because of sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, and other categories and update language relating to disabilities to use modern “people-first” language.

The Greater New Orleans Fair Housing Action Center worked with EQLA and Rep. Brossett to end housing discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.
